We're incredibly lucky to have beautiful Mount Maunganui with its white sand beach on our doorstep. The area is known locally as 'The Mount', and the mountain itself is called Mauao by the local maori.
There's always something going on at the beach, whether it's Surf Lifesaving Champs, parasailing, surfing or beach volleyball. There are surf lifeguards on duty during the summer months making it a safe swiming destination. There are loads of great cafes and restaurants for those wanting to sit back and relax.
If you enjoy walking, there are great walks around the Mount as well as tracks leading to the top of the Mount for superb views of the beach and surrounding islands. It's well worth the 1.5 kilometre hike, and it's a great place to watch the parasailers as they take off from the top of the mountain, or watch the boats as they head out the harbour to their favourite fishing spots in the Pacific Ocean. Catch a fishing charter for a great day out, or head out to sea for a close encounter with the dolphins.
A soak in the Mount hot pools at the base of the Mount will leave you feeling relaxed at the end of your day.
